The National Institutes of Health
NIH begins accepting applications for 2008 award programs. The programs support scientists who take innovative approaches to major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research.
Pioneer Awards provide $2.5 million in direct costs over five years and New Innovator Awards provide $1.5 million in direct costs over the same period. According to a prepared statement, the NIH expects to present 5 to 10 Pioneer Awards and up to 24 New Innovator Awards in September 2008.
Pioneer Award applications will be accepted from Dec. 16, 2007 to Jan. 16, 2008.

The NIH Director’s New Innovator Award
The New Innovator Award application period is March 3–31, 2008. The NIH Director’s New Innovator Award was created in 2007 to support a small number of new investigators of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative new research approaches that have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems in biomedical and behavioral research.
Total funding available is approximately $55 million for the five-year period. It is anticipated that up to 24 awards will be made in 2008. Deadline: March 31, 2008.

BBVA Foundation Biomedicine Chairs 2007
The BBVA foundation announces call for applications for six chairs in Biomedicine, designed to promote research and advanced training by means of the temporary attachment of leading international specialists to Spanish groups of excellence working at universities, research centers and medical institutions.
Each chair will be funded with the sum of €200,000. Deadline: Dec. 31, 2007.

Career Development Awards by PDS
Funding for senior researchers to ultimately establish a research group to study Parkinson’s disease. For researchers who have significant experience at a post-doctoral level, and the funding to cover applicant’s salary, in addition to appropriate start-up and running costs. Awarded for up to five years. Deadline: Dec. 17, 2007.

Cancer research UK Career Establishment Award
Applications in any area of basic and biomedical science relevant to cancer research.
The award will supply funds for one junior postdoctoral position and one research assistant or technician, as well as running expenses, which may include a supplement for applicant’s own bench costs. A separate amount can be requested for equipment (up to £25,000) and also for animal costs. Deadline: February 8, 2008.

Foundational questions in Physics and cosmology
To catalyze, support, and disseminate research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology, particularly new frontiers and innovative ideas integral to a deep understanding of reality but unlikely to be supported by conventional funding sources. FQXi’s 2008 program will be an international grants competition for approximately
US$ 2.5M, open to theorist and experiments in Physics, Cosmology and closely related fields.

E.T.S. Walton Visitor Awards
SFI’s E.T.S. Walton Visitor Awards programme enables highly qualified academic and industrial researchers resident outside Ireland to carry out research projects of their own choice in Ireland. Applications may be submitted for research stays normally of three to twelve continuous months. Grants range up to €200,000 per year, including a provision for salary, laboratory, and moving expenses. Deadline: December 19, 2007.

Prize 2007
The prize will be awarded to a career scientist who has worked in UK and whose work has made a major contribution to enhancing the management or understanding of human disease. The prize will be a personal award of €10,000 together with also present a distinguished lecture at a prize giving event in March.

The Champalimaud Foundation invites nominations for the €1,000,000.
