Call for Concept Research  Proposals on Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases (PIDD)

The US Immunodeficiency Network (USIDNET) is requesting Concept Research Proposals focused on primary immune deficiency diseases. USIDNET will award research subcontracts for up to  two years from $50,000 to $150,000 annually including indirect costs. USIDNET will consider Concept Proposals from U.S. and non-U.S. citizens.

USIDNET Research Objectives:

  • Study the clinical, molecular and cellular characteristics of genetically determined immunodeficiency diseases
  • Identify the molecular bases of newly defined PIDD
  • Discover improved diagnostic tools for PIDD
  • Advance novel therapeutic approaches for PIDD
  • Encourage utilization of the PIDD Registries and Repository

Applicants can submit a Letter of Intent with a short 2-3 page "Concept Paper" attached using an electronic application process at RAMS proposalCENTRAL website. If the Letter of Intent is approved, the applicant will be asked to submit a full application similar to the NIH 398 through proposalCENTRAL

Seeding Drug Discovery Awards
The objective of the initiative is to develop drug like small molecules that will be the springboard for further research and development in areas of unmet medical need.

Seeding Drug Discovery concept:

  • Interdisciplinary research by a 'customised' team
  • Focus on a specific drug discovery challenge
  • Outsourcing to bring in missing skills/resources and industry experienced consultants.

Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research
Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research functions from the basic premise that an optimum diet and a healthy lifestyle are the key to optimum health. The Prize consists of $50,000 and a medal, and is awarded biennially. It recognizes innovation and excellence in research relating to the roles of vitamins, essential minerals, and phytochemicals in promoting optimum health and preventing or treating disease; and the roles of oxidative/nitrative stress and antioxidants in human health and disease. The nominator should submit a nomination letter, two supporting letters solicited from his/her colleagues, and the candidate's up-to-date curriculum vitae. The candidate's research accomplishments in light of the purpose of the Prize should be amply described in the letters.

The Foundation for Polish Science

The Foundation for Polish Science is pleased to announce that in 2006, it joined the prestigious EURYI (European Young Investigator Award) program. The EURYI program addresses outstanding young researchers anywhere in the world who have between 2-8 years of postdoctoral experience at the closing date of the call and who wish to conduct their independent research in Poland. The total value of an award shall not exceed €1,250,000 over 5 years. The selection criteria for the EURYI Award are: research quality and potential of candidate, originality as well as the groundbreaking character of the research proposal and its feasibility, and the potential of the candidate and the proposed research program to improve the position of European research at world level.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is accepting applications for five-year awards ($80,000 per year) to provide new opportunities for accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the intersection of human and pathogen biology.   The program is intended to shed light on the overarching issues of how human hosts handle infectious challenge. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for advancing significantly the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how infections agents and the human body interact. Institutions may nominate three candidates as long as one candidate holds a D.V.M. degree and up to 14 awards may be made annually.

Juvenile Diabetes Research  Foundation (JDRF) Scholar Award
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation announces a scholar award to provide sustained support to scientists to perform pioneering basic or clinical research aimed at accelerating the progress toward a cure of type 1 diabetes and its complications. JDRF desires to support scientists with exceptional talent vision and creativity who are willing to take risks and attempt new research approaches.

JDRF scholar Awards up to  five years of funding of $250,000 annually and up to four awards will be granted in 2007. Eligible investigators must hold anacademic degree in scientific discipline hold an independent research position at a university health science center, or  comparable institution, and have ten years of relevant research experience.

In an effort to provide financial support to upcoming scientists, ScienceInfo now offers Travel Grants for Graduate Students and Post-docs Only. Up to $1,500 will be awarded for travel to a conference in the United States or Canada. For international meetings, up to $2,000 will be awarded. NIH OFFERS $35,000 IN ANNUAL STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT

Starting Friday, September 1, 2006, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will begin accepting applications to its five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). Deadline for applications is December 1, 2006.

The five LRPs offered by the NIH include the Clinical Research LRP, Clinical Research LRP for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds, Contraception and Infertility Research LRP, Health Disparities Research LRP, and Pediatric Research LRP. The application cycle for the NIH Loan Repayment Programs opens September 1, 2006, and closes December 1, 2006. The NIH awards up to $35,000 annually in student loan repayments to health professionals
engaged in qualifying research. Details and the online application are available at:
