The Institute for Protein Research (IPR)

The Institute for Protein Research (IPR) at Osaka University is calling for application for international collaborative research. The research should be conducted in the form of a collaboration including at least one of the principal investigators at IPR, or it should use particular experimental facilities of IPR, including solution- and solid-state-NMR spectrometers with ultra-high magnetic fields, and a synchrotron beam line for biological macromolecular assemblies at SPring-8.  IPR will support each project up to 200,000- Japenese Yen for visiting IPR. Each applicant should submit an application form for the collaborative research along with a recommendation letter from the PI in IPR.

Deadline: January 4, 2007. The application form and additional information at the following website:

The European Network of Research Infrastructures
The European Network of Research Infrastructures for providing Access and Technological Advancements in bio-NMR (EU-MR) is now operational.  EU-NMR has been financed by the EC as an Integrated Infrastructure Initiative to provide support to European researchers operating in the field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in the Life Sciences. The various sites cover a wide expertise in NMR and supporting areas including bimolecular structure determination in solution and solid states, metabonomics, protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions, protein folding and dynamics, advanced protein production. All expenses related to access are reimbursed by the Infrastructures.  Proposals should be submitted to: www.eu-nmr.eu. For more information, please visit the following website: http://www.eu-nmr.eu/.

FLASH, the first free-election laser
FLASH, the first free-election laser built for the vacuum-ultra-violet and soft x-ray region, has started user operation at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY).  Currently the FEL is covering a wavelength range from 13 nm to 50 nm providing typically 150 pulses per second with GW peak power and a pulse duration between 20 and 50 fs.  Interested researchers and groups are invited to submit proposals for experiments at FLASH starting in summer 2007.  They must reach us before October 1, 2006.  The evaluation will be based on scientific merit and feasibility at the FLASH user facility.  Access is provided free of charge for all non-proprietary research.  Detailed information can be found at www-hasylab.desy.de/facility/fel/main.htm.  New users may contact Dr. Josef Feldhaus (phone: +49 40 8998-3901, Josef.feldhaus@desy.de) for additional information before preparing a proposal.  More information can be found at the following website: www-hasylab.desy.de.

The Foundation for Polish Science

The Foundation for Polish Science is pleased to announce that in 2006, it joined the prestigious EURYI (European Young Investigator Award) program. The EURYI program addresses outstanding young researchers anywhere in the world who have between 2-8 years of postdoctoral experience at the closing date of the call and who wish to conduct their independent research in Poland. The total value of an award shall not exceed €1,250,000 over 5 years. The selection criteria for the EURYI Award are: research quality and potential of candidate, originality as well as the groundbreaking character of the research proposal and its feasibility, and the potential of the candidate and the proposed research program to improve the position of European research at world level.

Deadline: November 30, 2006.  For further information visit

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is accepting applications for five-year awards ($80,000 per year) to provide new opportunities for accomplished investigators at the assistant professor level to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the intersection of human and pathogen biology.   The program is intended to shed light on the overarching issues of how human hosts handle infectious challenge. The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for advancing significantly the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how infections agents and the human body interact. Institutions may nominate three candidates as long as one candidate holds a D.V.M. degree and up to 14 awards may be made annually.

Deadline: November 1, 2006
