NIH DIRECTOR ANNOUNCES
2007 PIONEER AWARD COMPETITION
NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., today launched a new round of competition for the NIH Director's Pioneer Award. This signature program supports exceptionally creative scientists who take highly innovative -- and potentially transformative -- approaches to major challenges in
biomedical research. Each Pioneer Award provides $2.5 million in direct costs over five years. NIH funded 35 scientists in the first three years of the program, which is part of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research. In September 2007, the agency expects to make between five and ten new Pioneer Award grants.

The application period opens on Friday, December 1, 2006 and closes on Tuesday, January 16, 2007.

The McKnight Endowment Fund

The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience supports innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated. To this end, The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience invites applications for the 2007 McKnight Scholar Awards. Awards are given to exceptional young scientists who hold the M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree and who are in the early stages of establishing an independent laboratory and research career. Up to six McKnight Scholars each will receive three years of support, beginning July 1, 2007. Each McKnight Scholar will receive $75,000 annually in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Endowed Scholars Program in Biomedical Research

UT Southwestern is pleased to announce the continuation of the Endowed Scholars Program in Biomedical Research, which provides start-up research support for newly appointed, tenure-track assistant professors.  Essential features of the program are in excess of $1,000,000 over four years and provided to support the independent research activities ($700,000), partial salary, and fringe benefits of each newly appointed assistant professor. Five scholars will be appointed each year. Positions in both Basic Science and Clinical Science departments are available.

The primary responsibility of the scholars will be research. Teaching and some clinical duties (if appropriate) will also be included.

Applications will be reviewed after two annual deadlines—December 1st and February 1st. Applications will be considered at other times under unusual circumstances.

The Cystinosis Research Foundation
The Cystinosis Research Foundation's (CRF) ultimate goal is a cure for this disease.  Research awards will be given for up to two years.   The CRF has over $1.2 million dollars in research funds available.  The number of awards and their value will depend on the number of outstanding proposals and the funds available at the time.  

  • Research Proposal - The CRF is pleased to announce its second 2006 call for research proposals. The CRF is prepared to fund proposals to improve the immediate care of children and young adults with cystinosis and to develop new understanding and treatment of cystinosis to help these children.
  • Post-Doctoral Fellowships - The CRF plans to establish the first post-doctoral research fellowship program in the US to encourage young investigators to establish careers in cystinosis research. Fellows will be funded for 2-3 years to a maximum of $75,000/year.

Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award
Seeking nominations for outstanding graduate students for the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award to recognize outstanding achievement during graduate studies in the biological sciences.

One nomination may be submitted per department or program. The nomination should be submitted ONLINE by the department/program chairperson and include the student's CV, a one page description of the thesis work conducted, and a recommendation letter from the student's mentor. The nomination should be submitted by December 15, 2006.

ScienceInfo’s Travel Grant

In an effort to provide financial support to upcoming scientists, ScienceInfo now offers Travel Grants for Graduate Students and Post-docs Only. Up to $1,500 will be awarded for travel to a conference in the United States or Canada. For international meetings, up to $2,000 will be awarded. Graduate students and Pos-docs from US,Canda,and Europe are eligible to apply. Applications should be submitted no later than October 31, 2006.
