The Royal Society
Science in Africa –
Excellence in Science

The Royal Society Pfizer Award - £65,000 available.
Invitations to nominate

The award is open to any research scientist, working in the UK or Africa, whose work in the biological sciences has led to a sustainable position impact on sub-Saharan Africa. The award will give up to £60,000 to carry out a programme of activities and £5,000 as a prize to the recipient.

European Science Foundation
Call for EUROCORES themes

ESF is looking for new ideas for collaborative research at the European level

The European Science Foundation (ESF) is an association of 78 member organizations in 30 European countries devoted to the coordination, implementation, networking, and science policy development in the basic sciences (www.esf.org). The ESF wishes to contribute to the European Research Area with its EUROCORES Scheme. It is inviting well-developed proposals for new EUROCORES Programmes (EUROCORES themes).

How to submit a EUROCOPRES theme proposal:
EUROCORES theme proposals must be received by June 1, 2006 (midnight) by e-mail in one single pdf attachment to eurocores@est.org. The title of the EUROCORES theme should appear in the subject line.

Research into Ageing
Funding Opportunities

Research in Ageing is a charity celebrating its 30th year of supporting biomedical research into the biology of ageing, and diseases and disabilities associated with other people (excluding cancer). Applicants may be any nationality, but the research must be carried out in the UK. The following awards are currently available:

Marjory Warren Clinical Research Fellowship; The British Geriatrics Society and Research in Ageing are delighted to announce the availability of a clinical research training fellowship to members of the BGS with an NTN in Geriatric Medicine. Funding is for a period of two to three years and should not exceed £180,000. Deadline for outline applications is May 1, 2006.

PhD Studentships: Outline applications from prospective supervisors are invited by May 1, 2006. 

Small Incontinence Awards: Provide support for up to £50,000 for research into urinary or faecal incontinence.  Deadline: July 14,2006.

Discipline Hopping Awards:  Support for up to V50,000 for established researchers not in the ageing field to investigate and develop ideas, skills and collaborations into ageing.  Deadline: May 1, 2006.

New Investigator Awards: Provide short-term flexible funding up to £50,000 for researchers at the start of their first academic appointment. Deadline: July 14, 2006.

EMBO
Strategic Development Installation Grants

The aim of the new scheme is to strengthen science in the participating countries. The grants will help scientists to relocate, set up their labs and rapidly establish a reputation in the European scientific community. The award consists of €50,000 annually for three to five years and participation in EMBO Young Investigator networking activities.

  • Croatia
  • Portugal
  • Czech Republic
  • Turkey
  • Poland

The Chronic Granulomatous Disorder Research Trust
Invitation for Research Applications

Significant funds are available to support innovative research into the cause, inheritance, diagnosis, management, and treatment of the primary immunodeficiency disorder CGD.

Applications that help address the inflammatory bowel complications that can cause severe problems in this disorder are particularly welcome.

Basic Grant Awards ($400,000) are also offered to support short-term, small-scale pilot or proof of concept research projects that may lead to new avenues of investigation and understanding of CGD. Awards beginning early in 2007

The Royal Society and Académie des Sciences Microsoft European Science Award

This prestigious new award, sponsored by Microsoft Research, is designed to recognise and reward scientists working in Europe who have made a major contribution to the advancement of science through the use of computational methods.

The 2006 award is open to any research scientist who has made a significant contribution at the intersection of the biological sciences and computing. In 2007, the award will focus on computing and the physical sciences.

The award will comprise a trophy and a monetary amount of €250,000, of which €7,500 will constitute prize money with the rest earmarked for further research. The award will be presented at a ceremony in October/November 2006.
