PROTEIN KINASE PROFILING SERVICES
Accelerate your knowledge of signaling pathways in your model system. With our Kinex Antibody Microarray Service, we will track the expression level and phosphorylation states of over 600 protein kinases, cell cycle, apoptosis, stress, heat shock and phosphatases for as low as $1.25 per protein. All hits can be validated with our Kinetworks™ custom services and results can be correlated to thousands of other data points in our KiNET proteomics database. For more information or to receive a copy of our poster with the domain structures of 516 protein kinases, please call 1-866-KINEXUS or email info@kinexus.ca.

Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI)
Bridging support for physical/computational scientists entering biology $500,000 award over five years for postdoctoral fellows.

You must be nominated by a degree-granting institution, so you must apply through a university affiliated with your research institute. Also, if you receive an award, the university affiliated with the research institute must agree to administer the award. With the exception of National Institutes of Health, nominations will not be accepted from federal facilities or research institutes that are not affiliated with a degree-granting institution. Degree-granting institutions in the US and Canada may nominate up to two candidates.

Application Deadline: May 1, 2006
Accepting electronic applications only.

STARS Grant

STARS is prepared to offer twenty-seven grants totaling $1.3 million dollars to uniquely qualified research teams of scientists and humanities scholars on a highly competitive basis. Three levels of grants will sponsor research by interdisciplinary teams of scientists and humanities scholars on the ways science, in light of philosophical and religious reflection, points towards the nature, character, and meaning of ultimate reality. Twenty initial planning grants of $20,000 each will be awarded to the most promising research teams (a total of $400,000), followed by five major research grants of up to $100,000 (a total of $500,000) and two grant renewals of up to $200,000 (a total of $400,000).

Prize Postdoctoral Fellowships in Nanoscience
The Kavli Nanoscience Institute invites applications and nominations for Prize Postdoctoral Fellowships in Nanoscience.

In this open competition, strong preference will be given to applicants who propose research in interdisciplinary areas of nanoscience. Prior to application submission, support for the proposed research should be formally obtained from two faculty members in different divisions at Caltech. The fellowships are to begin in Spring 2006 and are for a two-year duration. They carry an annual stipend and salary combination totaling $55,000.

SCIENCEseminar will present a seminar every week on current papers in the scientific arena. Be sure to check back often for a list of the topics.

Targeted biological therapies hold tremendous potential for treatment of cancer, yet their use has been limited by constraints on delivery and effective tumor targeting. We combined an Immune effector cell population (cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells) with an oncolytic viral therapy to achieve directed delivery to, and regression of, tumors in both immunodeficient and immunocompetent mouse models. Preinfection of CIK cells with modified vaccinia virus resulted in a prolonged eclipse phase with the virus remaining hidden until interaction with the tumor. Whole-body imaging revealed that the cells retained their ability to traffic to and to infiltrate the tumor effectively before releasing the virus. These results illustrate the potential of combining biotherapeutics for synergistic effects that more effectively treat cancer.

NIH Announces Program to Foster the Independence of new investigators
The award will work as follows: The initial 1-2 year mentored phase will allow investigators to complete their supervised research work, publish results, and search for an independent research position. The second, independent phase, years 3-5, will allow awardees who secure an assistant professorship, or equivalent position, to establish their own research program and successfully apply for an NIH Investigator-Initiated (R01) grant. The R01 is the major means by which NIH supports individual scientists in the field.
