 The March of Dimes Prize
Nominations of candidates are solicited for the 12th annual prize to be awarded in 2007. Please make your recommendations on or before September 15, 2006. The March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology, a cash award of $250,000 and a silver medal in the design of the Roosevelt dime, is awarded to investigators whose research has profoundly advanced the science that underlies our understanding of birth defects. Cottrell Scholar Award
Research Corporation announces the Cottrell Scholar Award, $100,000 in discretionary funds, is designed to identify early-career faculty who show promise to be future leaders in research, and who are committed to making significant contributions to teaching, especially at the undergraduate level. Qualified faculty should request an application package from Research Corporation. The deadline for proposal submission is the end of the first regular business day in September. Earlier submission is encouraged. In preparing the proposal, the Arial font size of 11 or larger is required. Applications using different or smaller font may be downgraded or returned. The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)
The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) supports basic research in the life sciences with emphasis on novel, innovative, and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchange across national and disciplinary boundaries. The HFSP supports postdoctoral investigators who explore new areas or who use their expertise in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering to bear on a biological question. Initially the program provides fellowships for training on postdoctoral researchers in another country (approximately 150K USD over 3 years) to start their independent research program. Long-term fellowships are intended for applicants with a Ph.D. degree in the life sciences who are expected to broaden their horizon and to move into a new research area that is different from their doctoral studies or previous postdoctoral training. Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships are intended for applicants with a Ph.D. degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or computer sciences who wish to gain research experience in the life science in proposing a significant change in discipline. The online submission system will become available in summer 2006 on the HFSP website. Short-term fellowships are intended for researcher early in their careers and provide up to 3 months of support to learn techniques in a new area of research or establish new collaborations in another country.  Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award
The Society for Neuroscience is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award. This prize is awarded each year at the SFN annual meeting to a young scientist who has received an advanced degree of either a Ph.D. or M.D. within the past fifteen years, and who has done research or plans to do research in the area of substance abuse and the brain and nervous system. The award is $25,000. Nomination packages for The Jacob P.  The Burroughs Wellcome Fund
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, an independent private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedical sciences, is now accepting applications for the 2007 Career Awards for Medical Scientists. Approximately $700,000 will be give over five years for physician-scientists. Candidates should have an M.D., D.D.S.,D.V.M., or equivalent clinical degree. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology research. Candidates must have at least two years of research experience and be in mentored position at the time of application. During the award period, at least 75 percent of the awardee’s time must be devoted to research-related activities.
Deadline: October 2, 2006.

The CALFED Science Program
The CALFED Science Program is announcing a solicitation for research proposals in support of the CALFED Bay-Delta Program. The goal is to invest in knowledge that will fundamentally advance the understanding of the complex environments/systems within the scope of the CALFED program to aid resource managers. American Health Assistance Foundation
The American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF) invites applications from researchers at non-profit institutions for the following programs:
- Alzheimer’s Disease Research: grant awards for Standard Awards, a total of $400,000 over three years; Pilot Project Awards, a maximum of $75,000 per year for up to two years; and Research Fellowships, a maximum of $50,000 per year for up to two years, for research into the causes and treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Application Deadline: October 13, 2006.
- National Glaucoma Research: grant awards of up to $45,000 per year for up to two years. NGR grants are primarily designed to provide seed money for new investigators entering the field of glaucoma research or innovative pilot projects from established investigators. NGR grants are not meant to provide continuous long-term funding for any single investigator.
Application Deadline: October 10, 2006.
- National Heart Foundation: starter grants of up to $30,000 per year for up to two years of research into the cause and treatment of stoke or cardiovascular disease. To qualify for a starter grant, the investigator must be an assistant professor (or equivalent) beginning an independent research career.

Access the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) vast resources free of charge to help move therapeutic agents for cancer to the clinic. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites the submission of proposals to Rapid Access to Intervention Development (RAID).
