The Max Planck Research Award

The Max Planck Research Award, which honors exceptionally accomplished German and foreign scientists and scholars who have already achieved international recognition and are expected to continue to produce outstanding academic work in international relations, is being granted for “neuromodulation and behavior”. Providing €750,000 for each prize, the award is presented once a year to a researcher working in Germany and to a researcher working abroad. Nominations can only be submitted via Principals or Presidents of German universities, or via persons who are otherwise entitled to submit nominations. Direct applications by candidates themselves is not possible.

Deadline for nominations is October 23, 2006.

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research announces for competition eight to twelve individual grants, each of SEK 2-4 million to young, well-qualified post-docs returning to Sweden. In addition, each individual will also be awarded a scholarship of SEK 50 000. The following criteria apply for eligibility:

  • The applicant must have received his or her PhD at a Swedish university no more than 3 years prior to the application deadline of September 28, 2006. 
  • The applicant must have conducted continuous postdoctoral studies outside of Sweden for at least 8 months prior to the application deadline.
  • The applicant must be steadily active in Sweden once again not earlier than September 1, 2005 and not later than August 31, 2007.

Food and Rural Affairs

The UK Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) funds research in many scientific disciplines across a wide range of animal health and welfare topics. Proposals should contain clear, testable objectives, which deliver high quality scientific output that can be used to inform policy decisions.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer
Breakthrough Breast Cancer announces two major new funding programs to support research into breast cancer at strategically important locations in the UK. The new unites and clinical researchers will develop collaborative programs of research with the Breakthrough Reseach Centre to improve our fundamental knowledge of breast tumourigensis and translate these findings rapidly to the clinic for patient benefit. Up to three new unites will be established, each having strong links with a major cancer hospital or breast unit and research institute or university. Each unit will receive funding of up to £1m per year for a five-year period to support the direct costs of approximately 15 research staff. It is envisaged that in the long term, on Breakthrough Research Unit will be expanded to become a Breakthrough Research Centre.

Applicants for Breakthrough Research Unites will be senior investigators in established positions and a proven track record in leading outstanding programs of cancer research. Outstanding and committed Clinician Scientists or Senior Clinical Academics will receive funding for up to five years to pursue a research program in addition to their clinical commitments. Up to £200,000 per year will be available for each successful applicant to cover full salary, research costs, and scientific support staff. Candidates will have completed, or be near to completing, specialist medical training, will have obtained a Ph.D. in a relevant  cancer field and may be conducting further postdoctoral research. 

A call for proposals will be issued in September 2006

European Animal Welfare and Alternatives Awards
Applications are now being accepted for the 2006 European Animal Welfare and Alternatives Awards supported by EUROTOX, the Humane Society International, and P&G. Awards of €25,000 will be presented in each of the following categories:

  • Alternative methods or research in toxicology and mechanistic risk assessment resulting in reduced animal use
  • laboratory science or education related to improvements in animal welfare
  • local community level organizations involved in the promotion of animal welfare.

Remedios Caro Almela Prize for
Research in Developmental Neurobiology

Applications are now being accepted for the 2006 Remedios Caro Almela Prize for Research in Developmental Neurobiology. An unrestricted award of €18,000 will be presented to a European investigator working in developmental neurobiology, who is presently in a highly productive period of his/her scientific career.
